{Chalk Paint® Tutorial} Gilding Wax + Clear Wax = A New Technique

Here we go with a FAB U LOUS tutorial on how to take your waxing technique to the next level.

This is an advanced technique, so I'm literally jumping right into the nitty gritty. I'm assuming that you already know how awesome Chalk Paint® decorative paint by Annie Sloan is, and that you know how to find your nearist stockist for all the basic info and supplies. If you don't, then stay tuned for some basics tutorials down the line.

First, a sneak peek at the finished project. Drum roll please........

Isn't she glamorous? Ok, let me break it down for you...

1) The drawers: They are painted in Country Grey. I just cleaned them well, and painted them - no sanding, no priming. Just how I like it. Next step was to clear wax, and then dark wax those beauties. No special tricks on those, just good waxing technique (to come in a later post).

2) The top and sides: This is the fun part, and it may take you to a new waxing level. Begin by cleaning the wood to remove any residue. Next, paint the top and sides Paris Grey to give it a good base coat to apply the wax to. Since I planned to use the silver gilding wax, the Paris Grey was a good color choice.
Once you have two coats of paint on your piece,  you can move to the waxing phase. This is where you can add your sparkle.
Grab a paper plate, and scoop about a 1/2 cup of Clear Wax onto the plate. Grab your Silver Gilding Wax (click here to read more on that), and add a tablespoon to the Clear Wax.  Product beauty shot coming up...

Mix the two together very well so you have silver wax to apply to your piece. Apply the silver wax just as you would the clear wax, pushing it gently into the piece with a wax brush, wiping the excess back gently and so on. Let it sit for a day, and come back to it with a soft cloth. Give it a vigorous buffing and it will shine, shine, shine.

If you aren't getting enough shine, change the ratio and add more silver to the mix. You can also achieve this look with the bronze and gold gilding waxes.

For the finishing touch, I washed the original hardware, and then used the gilding wax straight up on the hardware. VOILA - it looks like new! Love that stuff! and love this dresser.
